{"id":5144,"date":"2025-02-14T11:12:17","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T00:42:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/strawman.com\/blog\/?p=5144"},"modified":"2025-02-14T11:12:18","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T00:42:18","slug":"strawman-club-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/strawman.com\/blog\/strawman-club-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Strawman Club Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This week we reopened the doors to new members and are delighted to welcome some fresh new faces to our little community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re new to the team, welcome aboard!&nbsp;We\u2019re excited to work together and uncover more&nbsp;opportunities in the lesser-known corners of the ASX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ll schedule an induction session for new members once we finalise things, but we did receive a query during the week which got me (Andrew here) thinking;&nbsp;what are the &#8216;club rules&#8217; for Strawman?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, aside from some expectations around civility and respect,&nbsp;there really aren&#8217;t any formal rules!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if we were to post some guidelines, they&#8217;d probably go something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.&nbsp;No Bullsh*t<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This one is inspired by Netflix&#8217;s Reed Hastings, which essentially encourages direct and honest communication. Everyone&#8217;s better off if we all communicate in an authentic, clear and transparent manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Dump the pump<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are here to discuss actionable investment ideas and strategies, backed by credible data and sound reasoning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By all means, talk your book &#8212; but leave the ramping of some speccy nonsense to the grifters on twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Agree to disagree<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest risks we face is &#8216;groupthink&#8217;. And while it&#8217;s nice to have others echo your views, it can blind you to the risks and falsely strengthen conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, the best way to improve an invest idea is to challenge it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Debate ideas, not people<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it&#8217;s good to get some push back on your thinking, there&#8217;s no need to make it personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leave the&nbsp;<em>ad hominem<\/em> attacks to the social media trolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Be a teacher<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Tim Minchin once said &#8220;<em>Rejoice in what you learn, and spray it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do it not just for the benefit of others, but also yourself. When one teaches, two learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Be humble<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No&nbsp;one tends to stay at the top of the performance leaderboards for long, and even the very best investors will struggle through periods of underperformance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. No talking out of school<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing member-exclusive ideas or content outside the club is like playing poker with your cards facing up &#8211;it hurts everyone involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens in Strawman stays in Strawman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8. A broad church<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are dozens of ways to skin the investing cat, and we don&#8217;t really care if you&#8217;re a momentum trader, value investor or dividend diehard!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the day, results are what matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9. Own your ideas<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll find a lot of interesting stock ideas on Strawman, but whether or not you choose to act on them is entirely your call. As I like to say;&nbsp;you can borrow an idea, but you can&#8217;t borrow the conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want someone to think for you, there&#8217;s an army of financial gurus out there eager to sell you some stock tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10. Have fun<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, investing can be serious business, but that doesn\u2019t mean we can\u2019t enjoy the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let\u2019s keep things engaging, friendly, and yes, even fun.
