An acronym for \u201c<em>not gonna make it<\/em>,\u201d it\u2019s used as a bit of a dig at those making poor life choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Texting your ex at 2 am? NGMI.<br>Buying a jet ski on Afterpay? NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turns out, it\u2019s also the perfect slogan for the stock market. Every bull run, every crash, every frothy \u201cthis time it\u2019s different\u201d moment brings out the same old cast of characters, making the same old mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you know what to look for, it\u2019s not hard to spot who\u2019s NGMI (and, hopefully, it\u2019s not the face staring back at you in the mirror).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some of the classic tells:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Confuses volatility with risk.<\/strong><br>Yes, shares are volatile. No, that&#8217;s not the same as risk. If you can\u2019t understand the difference, well, NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chases short term trends<\/strong><br>A good stock is one that is going up, and a bad stock is going down. Ha! If only. NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mistakes share price with value<\/strong><br>If you think a $100 stock is more expensive than a $10 stock, you probably think a pizza cut into eight slices is more food than one cut into four. NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Buys the theme, not the business<\/strong><br>AI is the future, this company uses AI, ipso facto it\u2019s a winner! If you can\u2019t separate a buzzword from a business model, NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thinks their broker\u2019s on their side<\/strong><br>Just like real estate agents only want what\u2019s best for you. Bless your cotton socks, but NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Insists it&#8217;s not a loss until you sell<\/strong><br>Keep telling yourself that, champ. NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Trades way too much<\/strong><br>If you think holding a stock for more than a month or two counts as long term, well, NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Believes averaging down reduces the loss<\/strong><br>It&#8217;s a nice idea, but maybe stop to think about what you&#8217;re saying. Otherwise, NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Obsesses over meaningless precision<\/strong><br>You like the company, think it\u2019s cheap, but place your buy order 2c below the market price. If you think that changes anything, NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Avoids profit to save tax<\/strong><br>If you think that&#8217;s smart, ask your boss for a pay cut. Definitely NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assumes a good product means a good investment<\/strong><br>WeWork offices are very cool. The stock&#8230; not so much. Can\u2019t understand the difference? NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Believes everything management says<\/strong><br>You think the CEO is going to give it to you straight? LOL. NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thinks they know it all<\/strong><br>No, you don&#8217;t. No one does. If you think otherwise, definitely NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Follows \u2018hot tips\u2019<\/strong><br>Your barber, your Uber driver, your cousin at Christmas lunch (all financial geniuses). Trust them with your life savings? NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ignores opportunity cost<\/strong><br>Holding a &#8216;meh&#8217;&nbsp;stock for years because it&#8217;s not terrible.&nbsp;Meanwhile, great businesses compound without you. NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anchors to past highs<\/strong><br>If it used to be $50 and now it\u2019s $10, it has to go back up!&nbsp;Sure, and MySpace is about to crush Facebook. NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thinks &#8216;stop loss&#8217; orders protect you<\/strong><br>Great for generating commissions for brokers, <a href=\"https:\/\/strawman.com\/blog\/stop-using-stop-loss-orders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not so good<\/a>&nbsp;for creating wealth. Disagree? NGMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>If any of these hit a little too close to home, fret not. All of us have operated under some flawed reasoning at one time or another.
