Everyone, it seems, knows exactly where the price of oil is heading next month, what the next Fed rate decision will be, and exactly where the market will be at year’s end.

It’s exhausting. But the reality is that, in this game, certainty sells. No one’s signing up to your Substack if all you do is shrug your shoulders and say “it depends.”

Yet, in a world completely obsessed with having all the answers, the three most profitable words an investor can ever utter are “I don’t know.”

As Mark Twain once observed (allegedly), it’s not what you don’t know that gets you into trouble, it’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so. The illusion of knowledge is far more dangerous than admitted ignorance.

As you log more miles in the world of investing, a strange and humbling paradox emerges. The more you learn, the more you realise just how vast your ignorance truly is. True financial maturity isn’t about accumulating a mountain of definitive answers. It’s about mapping the precise borders of your own limitations.

Remember, risk doesn’t hide in the things you actively acknowledge you can’t predict. Instead, it breeds in the dark corners where you naively assume you have it all figured out — although the markets have a brutal way of slapping that arrogance out of you eventually.

As it does the notion that complexity correlates with profitability. The investment industry loves to convince you that to make serious money, you must solve difficult, Byzantine puzzles. That you shouldn’t even think of buying some stocks until you intimately understand global supply chains, monetary and fiscal mechanics, and all manner of obscure high-finance happenings.

But the markets aren’t a gymnastics meet. There are no bonus points awarded for the degree of difficulty, as Uncle Wazza likes to say. A dollar of profit generated from a painfully complex, multi-layered corporate restructuring deal spends exactly the same as a dollar generated by a boring company that’s consistently delivering value for its customers.

That’s why the “too hard pile” is an investor’s best friend. If a business model is confusing, if its future earnings are completely opaque, or if the management team speaks in corporate riddles, the best move is usually to pass. There’s no shame in walking away, even if it turns out in hindsight to have been a great trade.

You don’t need to own everything to win.

Unfortunately, in our hyper-connected, notification-driven world, inaction is treated as a character flaw. We suffer from a twitchy compulsion to do something, anything. We feel the urge to trade the volatility, fiddle with the portfolio, or chase the latest tech-driven hype train because of an acute case of FOMO.

However, in the grand theatre of wealth creation, doing nothing is frequently the highest-yielding strategy available. There’s real dignity in simply sitting on your hands when no clear opportunities present themselves, and great advantage in acting decisively when something does eventually land inside your wheelhouse.

Protecting your capital starts with knowing your limits. Growing it means having the patience to wait for what you truly understand, and the courage to strike when it finally arrives.

Strawman is Australia’s premier online investment club.
Members share research & recommendations on ASX-listed stocks by managing Virtual Portfolios and building Company Reports.
