Somewhat confronting episode of 4 Corners last night about deep seabed mining for critical minerals. Whilst I'm a long way from being a full-blown greenie, I do think there are some things we should not dabble with, especially without fully understanding the consequences. Certainly, the one area of the planet that remains a mystery to all scientists is the ocean and specifically the deep seabed and its support for our environment.
Of course, as we know from investing, we all have biases; some known, most unknown or not immediately recognizable without self-reflection. I know I love the ocean and the critters that I have met there over the years as a diver. Maybe that's why the 4 Corners show last night hit a bit of a raw nerve as the 2 Countries that have signed permits with $TMC are Nauru and Tonga. I have spent a lot of time since 2017 in Tonga each year swimming with the humpbacks (as per a photo below taken of me filming a mum & calf).
Maybe in our special Strawman environment, we have some knowledge about this type of mining, so I'd love any views, positive or negative please.
I know 4 Corners can produce a lot of their shows with an agenda in mind pre-production, but for me, the deep seabed is sacrosanct!!
