Just wondering if anyone else has had this situation happen before.

Had a partially filled order go through on the close yesterday - for the grand total of 1 stock. Ended up paying 11.23 for 1 ERD stock at 1.725!

I've never really thought about this before hence why I wasn't really paying attention at the close. Is there any way to prevent this situation?

Partially filled orders can happen often@takezo. If you want to fill your order after market close you can change your offer price to meet the market in the after market session which runs from 4pm to 4.10pm. Yes you can place and change orders during this session.

if you don’t cancel your order it will carry over until the order expires and your broker will attempt to complete your order and you pay the normal brokerage in total (if you select ‘Good til expiry’).

It appears you may have already paid your brokerage, so additional shares would be bought by your broker at no additional brokerage cost if you had selected ‘ Good til expiry’. Just looking at ERD bids this morning, it appears you have either cancelled your order, or put in a ‘Good for day’ order ($1.705 is the highest bid in the pre-open session this morning).

You can avoid paying full brokerage for a handful of shares by selecting ‘Good til expiry’ instead of ‘Good for day’

I hope this helps.

cheers

Thanks for the reply @Rick. Yes my order was only 'good for the day'.

Bit of a separate question, but can you adjust an order that's partially filled? I.e. if this order didn't expire and the price increased, could I have adjusted my buy price? I suspect not.

Yes @takezo, you can adjust your bid price for partially filled orders (Commsec at least). I often do this if I have an order partly filled at the end of the day. One thing you do need to watch is the brokerage thresholds if you ‘count the pennies’ like me :). With Commsec you can trade up to $10K in a parcel at $19.95. If your order is one cent over you pay $29.95. Consequently I tend to trade in $10K lots.
