Everything you need to know about Strawman
A ‘beta’ is an early version of a software program that is still under development.
In Strawman’s case, we’re looking to identify any small bugs, as well as gather valuable feedback from early users. It helps us refine the platform to make it more robust and valuable to users.
We expect the beta to last for up to 6 months, possibly longer -- it all depends!
Nothing! The Strawman platform is absolutely free during the beta phase.
Some features will only be accessible to registered and paying users once we go live, but many of the features on Strawman will remain free indefinitely.
Strawman is based on the belief that the best way to improve an investment idea is to challenge it. A process that helps build conviction, refine perspectives and, ultimately, deliver superior investment outcomes.
An ‘Investment Strawman’ that can withstand the scrutiny of an engaged, informed and experienced community of investors is likely a credible — and hence valuable — one.
The Strawman platform allows members to share research and recommendations on ASX listed companies through interactive company reports. Everything from key business insights to growth forecasts and valuations.
Members of the community can choose to endorse, reject or add to any part of these reports, allowing them to build up personalised research notes for any ASX-listed company.
The platform aggregates and ranks content to produce dynamic, peer-reviewed and actionable investment reports.
Strawman also collates and ranks member recommendations. Discover investment ideas from specific members, build your own track-record, and track the the community's most popular recommendations via the ‘Strawman Index’
The more you contribute, the more likely you are to attract followers, and that enables you to earn real cash rewards! (See the FAQ How does the revenue share model work?)
Just as importantly, we believe that constructive engagement with other experienced investors will lead to superior investment returns. Sharing your perspectives and insights is not about charity, nor vanity or ego — it’s about seeking to test and refine your thinking.
To allow yourself the uncomfortable luxury of changing your mind.
It’s a core concept that is preached by the world’s best thinkers and investors. Here are a few of our favourite quotes:
“I learned a great fear of being wrong that shifted my mind-set from thinking “I’m right” to asking myself “How do I know I’m right?” And I saw clearly that the best way to answer this question is by finding other independent thinkers who are on the same mission as me and who see things differently from me. By engaging them in thoughtful disagreement, I’d be able to understand their reasoning and have them stress-test mine. That way, we can all raise our probability of being right. In other words, I just want to be right—I don’t care if the right answer comes from me. So I learned to be radically open-minded to allow others to point out what I might be missing.”
“Acknowledging what you don't know is the dawning of wisdom.”
“My conceptual framework, which basically emphasizes the importance of misconceptions, makes me extremely critical of my own decisions. I know that I am bound to be wrong, and therefore am more likely to correct my own mistakes.”
“To better avoid errors, you should talk to people who disagree with you and you should talk to people who are not in the same emotional situation you are.”
“You should take the approach that you’re wrong. Your goal is to be less wrong.”
“Anybody who doesn’t change their mind a lot is dramatically underestimating the complexity of the world we live in.”
“The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts.”
“Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is an absurd one.”
“Beliefs are hypotheses to be tested, not treasures to be guarded”
“The beginning of thought is in disagreement - not only with others but also with ourselves.”
To recognise and reward members for their contributions, Strawman plans to offer a revenue share scheme (date of commencement yet to be announced).
In essence, each member will receive $1 per follower, per month (pro rata). With each member able to follow up to 10 different members. At scale, the cash rewards for popular members could be substantial...
Following a member means that you receive notifications when a user posts new content or recommendations. Members are free to follow whomever they wish, but those with the best performance and high-quality content will most likely attract the most followers.
Once the beta period ends, the revenue share scheme will only be available to paid subscribers.
More detail will be provided once the model is implemented
No. Members are not required to contribute content or recommendations. More passive users can simply rely on Strawman as a source of independent research and recommendations.
That being said, we firmly believe that an engaged investor is a successful investor. Remember, Strawman is about constructive collaboration -- not conflict and criticism. So don’t be afraid to put yourself out there!
Yes! Anything you post can be kept private, and will only be viewable by you. Indeed, some members use Strawman specifically as a cloud-based research management tool.
We would, however, encourage that you allow yourself the uncomfortable luxury of changing your mind. One of the great benefits of the Strawman platform is that it allows you to test your assumptions. When it comes to improving your investment returns, avoiding costly mistakes is just as important -- if not more important -- as finding successful investments.
We are a broad church at Strawman, although our members can be loosely defined as business focused investors. Our philosophy is based on the idea that if a business does well, and shares are purchased at a sensible price, investment success will follow.
As such, the Strawman platform seeks to capture key business insights and industry characteristics, as well as growth forecasts and valuations.
At this stage, Strawman uses end of day prices. Share prices are updated at around 5pm each day. We source our data from Morningstar.
If ever you get lost within the platform, or are unsure of what to do, look for the help icon located at the top right of every page. This is a ‘context sensitive’ button that will provide information on the page you are currently on.
Also, when in doubt, try it out! Any action can easily be undone so don’t be afraid to experiment.
If you really get stuck, you can always send us an email at [email protected] and we’ll get back to you ASAP.
