We've all heard that investing is more about 'time in the market than timing the market'.  I believe this is true, but as a value investor how important is timing. When a company on your watch list has dipped below your buy point but still falling, when do you buy? We all know what it's like trying to catch a falling dagger! Ouch! :(

Until recently I have never been that interested in charting. Commsec introduced some advanced charting features, incuding Bollinger Bands. I read that the Bollinger Band Sqeeze (when volatility narrows) is a sign that a price trend is likely to occur, either up or down. This can be a useful indicator to buy or sell, depending on the trend following a squeeze.
Does anyone use Bollinger Bands or other charting tools to help with timing when value investing? Keen to hear your thoughts.
