To add to this thread on Investment Education - industry information and knowledge is also important to understand the macroeconomic forces at play for a particular industry.

By no means will books make you an expert but hopefully provides that level of insight to make someone more comfortable investing in a particular stock.

  • The Cancer Code by Dr Jason Fung (Off the back of @slymeat's straw on Imugene)
  • Toxic: The Rotting Underbelly of the Tasmanian Salmon Industry by Richard Flanagan
  • Banking Bad by Adele Ferguson
  • Digital Gold, The Untold Story of Bitcoin by Nathaniel Popper
  • The Revolution That Wasn't: How GameStop and Reddit Made Wall Street Even Richer by Spencer Jakab

Unfortunately - we don't have the time to get jobs in all the industries we want to invest in.

In the Strawman membership there are many people that would like to learn more about investing, but the question is where do you start and who can you trust?

With investment training programs costing thousands of dollars then it is easy to go down the wrong path and waste both time and money.

Let me give you a bit of a back story.

Probably some of you may know Mike Bellafiore in the US, he runs a team of prop traders and basically his company spots them the trading cash and they trade and his company mentors the traders and takes a percentage of the trading profits. There is the resident psychologist on hand to help the traders deal with the internal conflicts to make them better traders.

You can check out Mike on his YouTube channel if you are at all interested in trading strategy and what it takes to be good. To me this is a completely different world and not something I want to do.

Mike is the author of the book, One Good Trade, which describes inside the world of Proprietary Trading, and whilst not everyone aspires to be a day trader, it is good to know what you are up against.

Where I am going with this post is that in Canada there is a guy called Mohsen Hassad, who also runs a team of Prop Traders.

Now Mohsen had a problem, in that the people who were applying to be a Prop Trader at his firm did not always have the basic knowledge requirements. So to help streamline his intake he created some courses on Udemy that covered the basic requirements of understanding that he needed in his Prop Trading firm.

I have taken two of Mohsen's courses (marked) and I can say that if you want to shortcut your investment learning then these represent very good value when they are on special offer.

So the heads up is that these courses are currently special priced in the range $15-25 as part of the Black Friday sales. Normally they are 10 times this price, so take the opportunity to check them out.

There are three courses on offer, so check out the curriculum to see what meets your needs.

Just in case the link does not work I posted a picture of the three courses above.

Now if you are a qualified accountant you are going to find some of the things pretty basic in course 2.

I started with course 3 thinking I knew it all and now I have purchased course 2 and I am very likely to purchase course 1 based upon what I am learning.

Normally these course sell for $540 but for the 3 day special offer you can get them all for less than $60 for 22 hours of training.

There is no higher priced course that he is trying to sell you, there is no upsell or private trading room access for an additional fee and in my mind and so I share this information for those that want to check it out.

Mohsen is not my family, there is no affiliate link, he is over on Udemy and I found his courses useful and you might too. Now, if you are very cautious, take one course now, then come back around Christmas, Valentines Day, Easter and it will be back on sale again and choose another course.

I hope some of you can get some value from this post, as I certainly got value from purchasing these course and I thought I knew it all.

With all the knowledgeable people on here we could probably pool our collective wisdom and make our own library of investment education resources. Two courses I found particularly useful when I started my investment journey were:

CFIs Financial Modeling & Valuation Analyst (FMVA) course

Rask Educations Beginner Shares Course and Value Investor Program

Depending what level you're at there are beginner level podcasts such as

Phil Muscatello's Shares for Beginners, Equity Mates or Fresh Capital: A Podcast for Investors

Through to intermediate

Trawling for Ten Baggers, Australian Investors Podcast, Baby Giants, Scaling Up, Planet Microcap, DIY Investing Podcast, Investing City, Capital Allocators, The Business Brew, The Latticework Podcast, The Memo by Howard Marks, Compounding Curiosity, Australian Finance Podcast

To more advanced

Invest Like the Best, The Acquirers Podcast, Focused Compounding, This Week in Intelligent Investing

Books, lots to choose from but if I had to narrow it down to a top 10

Beginner

Either of Peter Lynch's books - Beating the Street or One Up on Wall Street, The Wisdom of Crowds - James Surowiecki, The Little Book of Behavioural Investing - James Montier, Common Stocks, Uncommon Profits - Phil Fisher

Intermediate

Crossing the Chasm - Geoffrey Moore, The Most Important Thing Illuminated - Howard Marks, The Intelligent Investor - Ben Graham, 7 Powers - Hamilton Helmer, Masters of the Market - Hughes, Wilson & Kidman, Thinking, Fast and Slow - Kahneman, Superforecasting - Tetlock & Gardner

Bonus book: Influence - Robert Cialdini

Those two courses complemented with some select podcast episodes as well as a few investing books should bring anyone up to a competent level. When I started investing during Covid I didn't even know how to buy a share and those resources got me to a level where I feel confident investing in individual companies (if I can do it anyone can). And of course I can't forget how invaluable Strawman has been.

Are there any other courses, websites, podcasts, books, videos etc anyone recommends?

That's a great list Canadian Aussie. I'm reading Peter Lynch at the moment and I'm surprised how engaging he is. The last investment book I read was The Intelligent Investor by Ben Graham and although it is required reading I found it tough to wade through. It's drier than an Australian summer. But Peter Lynch is really entertaining and surprisingly self-deprecating (not to be confused with self-defecating - a mistake I made a journalist once...and only once).

To the podcasts I'd add Rule Breaker Investing - David Gardner and Talk Ya Book - Chris Judd.

In terms of educational resources I think this is an excellent online (and free) investment course produced by Aswath Damodaran, who also has written a book called Investment Philosophies.

I agree Noddy, the Intelligent Investor is tough to get through but has some timeless lessons (margin of safety, Mr Market etc).

Bjbart, do you have a link to the Growth Investing Mastery course?

Everyone will have heard of the Motley Fool and likely will have an opinion. I had a Share Advisor and Dividend Investor subscription years ago, and in the case of Dividend Investor, that is where I was first aquatinted with Andrew. Indeed I met up with Andrew and Scott for a beer in Queen Street on a day they had been to visit Collection House, but I digress.

What is the point of that story, podcasts. I have learnt so much from podcasts. In part possibly as I listen to them in my commute (via train) or when I am plodding my daily 10k steps. This is perfect listening and thinking time.

The new Baby Giants podcast, which features more than Andrew as an ex Motley Fool, is excellent as are many, many others. And I recommend not limiting yourself to Australian podcasts, there are superb offshore versions which bring global thinking.

A benefit of podcasts over books is you get current thinking not lagging ideas. Not to disparage books, I am an avid reader too.

On the way home this evening, featuring a founding Fool, is one of the best I have heard in ages: https://podcastaddict.com/episode/131720276

103hrs over 2 months. That was before they added the final exam and a few new courses. I also was working from home during Covid with very little work which allowed me to put a lot of time into it.
