Let me start by saying, I don’t know how there is a business here, and then completely change my mind. Give me some licence and I’ll explain.

To start, I don’t eat dessert. It’s just not something I have ever done, probably as it was not a thing in our household when I was a child. That said, if someone offered me ice cream, I’d want the full fat, full decedent experience.

Then, I turn and look at Miss 25 of the world today. Oat milk this, kale that, impossible burgers for the barbeque, then it starts to make more sense.

Also, I think about climate change extensively and wonder if in 100 years we will look back at the diets of people in 2022 and speculate what those savages were doing consuming animal products.

So this is where I am and why Tasmanian Pure Foods starts to appear interesting. Not that all their products are plant based, the range includes pate and trout (the original core business), but they have expanded to be plant focused, including products unlikely plant substitutes of cheese and ice cream.

Founding in 2005 and listing via a takeover of Bunji Corporation (ASX: BCL) in 2020, the company has done well getting product on the shelves in major supermarkets. This can only be a good thing.

While the market is growing, and so is revenue, expenses are growing faster. Make no mistake, this is a tiny business. Revenue is measured in single digit millions and the market cap is sub 20M.

Still, I think it’s one to watch as consumer preferences continue to evolve.
