In Feburary 2025 the Melbourne based Symal were awarded a $34m contract to upgrade Wollombi Road on the outskirts of Cessnock NSW.
In FY 2025 Symal’s revenue was $888m. So the contract represented less than 4% of Symal's annual turnover. So pretty small in the context of the overall business.
On tonight’s local news it was announced that Cessnock City Council had terminated Symal’s contract.
Who knows just what has gone on between the two parties and just where financially the dispute will end up.
It does however highlight how winning a contract and successfully executing on it are potentially very different.
