Hi all,

Perth meet up was great fun yesterday. Thanks to @Rudyboy and @Arena42 for coming along and making an event of it. While there was only 3 of us we certainly made the most of it discussing our varying experiences and different perspectives.

Some excellent conversation, ranging from Perth home-grown microcaps, to the stock specifics of Veem (VEE), and to our combined admiration of Washington H. Soul Pattinson.

Group chat has been set up, and we’re already planning a catch up again soon.

This is a testament to the Strawman community (and @Strawman) bringing different individuals together to share a collective appreciation of investing.

Thanks again gents.

P.S. apologies for the poor picture quality should’ve checked this one before we left the bar.

Apologies Andrew - I thought I'd mentioned this to you, but it appears I haven't.

Come one, come all!

Seeing as there are a few other meet-ups being arranged elsewhere around the country, throwing it out there to see if anyone in Perth was interested in catching up?

I'm relatively easy on time and place, however, I do work FIFO so would be limited to when I am back in Perth.

Let me know if there is any interest in this and I'll see what I can organise.

I'm definitely in for a meetup in Perth. In Thailand from 15 to 22 October and have to run to Saudi for three days before, but got a Seniors card for the train so can meet anywhere (I am in Rockingham).

Thanks for the help in getting this going @Strawman.Those interested - thanks for your patience in me getting back to this.

Next weekend could be ideal (Week ending 14/15) or the following weekend also works (21/22), Friday arvo's also suit. Was thinking a pint (for those reading this on the East - that's what we call a 'pot') with option of also grabbing a feed somewhere central to the CBD(?), areas like Leederville, Vic Park, South Perth etc. would be great.

Alright, so the Perth SM catch up is scheduled for 5pm Friday the 27th October at the 'Exchange Bar' (see what we did there) in West Leederville.

At this stage only 3 confirmed, so plenty of room for more.

Minutes/Notes from Perth Meet up:

Hi All,

We had a meet up over the weekend which went well, in total 4 of us managed to get down for a beer and some banter, unfortunately a few late withdrawals (one specifically being notified he was a close contact prior) but overall was good to put a face to a name/strawman username. Some general comments below:

  • Discussed personal backgrounds, current occupations and experience in investing
  • General discussion around some positions currently held - in both SM and IRL
  • I discussed the bull and bear case for NST - over both short term and long term. I believe the organisation is feeling pressures at it's flagship mine (KCGM) due to the merge of Saracen and Northern Star along with severe labour shortages, this will however, pass in time. Currently, I am slightly bearish on the company - but this is offset with the issues in Eastern Europe and macroeconomic themes.
  • ASX: BGL is a gold company to watch with much of NST Management making their way across, would like to hear @Bear77 thoughts on this who did get a mention during discussion
  • I discussed some of my held positions which I will look to add some straws to in coming weeks (YOJ and others).
  • General sense/perception amongst the group that there is a higher 'tolerance' and almost acceptance for mining exploration companies in WA
  • One non-strawman member discussed his thesis for investing into Russian equity opportunities - this obviously generated some discussion
  • @Atra discussed Top Shelf International Holdings (TSI) at length. He had done some excellent research into this company and I strongly encourage him posting about this or, potentially as a stock pitch. However, current stance on this company has recently shifted.
  • @secondtake88 did a mini pitch on one of his more high conviction positions - Change Financial (CCA), I also encourage him to discuss this further or potentially as a stock pitch if he so chooses.
  • I discussed cost pressures associated with some mining companies as they develop deeper underground (NST and EVN specifically)
  • Also discussed:
  • ASX: HVST and what appears to be a terrible strategy
  • Discussion on Tassels (TGR)
  • Lark distilling's recent issues with their MD and whether this implicates the value for the company
  • Aeris Resources (AIS) and Aeeris (AER) confusing names on the ASX

Special thanks to @Atra for organising this, who will add his comments below.

Feel free to reply with any comments or questions on the above.

@Atra the second point - personal takeaway, is a hard cognitive bias to get past. Indeed many hold on to either see a recoup in losses or a stock reach its 'potential' of its buy-case when it was originally purchased.

Sounds like a good meetup, just joined Strawman , when covid dies down abit might be able to drop in, for now i'm trying to minimise my exposure due to those around me rather than my own worries. And with covid flaring up in WA now .....

Re: Russia, that's definitely some iron nerves and balls of steel in my opinion to take a position.... I'd imagine immense gains if one was to call it right, but with eveyrthing going on, i'd i'magine there's lower risk-return rewards out there that wlll be much easier to sleep through.

What's the moral feeling as well supporting Russian share prices vs letting them sink? I'd imagine there's a fair bit of bias on holding these stocks just on the moral high ground side of things.... and frankly i can't blame them. Although I'm sure push comes to shove eventually money speaks.....

Got a Lark in the back room and a great drop.

Hey folks,

I've just joined Strawman, did a search for "Perth" and this is the thread that popped up.

Wondering if subsequent meetups are in the works?

Cheers,

Kyle.
