I added Soul Patts to my super portfolio today. One of the stronger businesses on the ASX – Soul Patts has a fascinating history and has demonstrated that they are an excellent ‘long term’ hold. Refer to @endean's Straw from several months ago for more info re: the businesses track record. In short, it is bloody impressive!
Ultimately, my thesis relates to securing the capital allocation skills and the track record of management. A growing part of their portfolio is now unlisted; consequently, Soul Patts also provides me with exposure to opportunities outside of the ASX (and to a lesser extent, the Nasdaq) – opportunities that I don’t have access to.
A good portion of my super is invested in NDQ, while I also hold ASIA and ETHI – the latter being an ESG related play; a thesis that investors will be more inclined to invest their hard-earned in companies perceived to be ‘climate leaders’ over the long term. Outside of those three ETFs, I hold seven companies, some of which are volatile due to being tech related. The addition of Soul Patts provides me with a defensive, long-term focused company with a great track record. But don't let the 'defensive' word bore you, if they continue to perform in the manner they have the last 20 years – a good bet in my opinion – I will be thrilled.
