Terrific podcast on the Dolby business and I recommend listening to it in the context of Audinate.

Dolby licenses the tech, and doesn’t compete with hardware and other brands, which ensures there is interoperability between brands and no conflict of interest with or between OEM’s (original equipment manufacturers)
Some points covered which are relevant to Audinate
- “positive brand transference” for OEM’s and trust from final customers
- low customer concentration
- high IP
- high gross margins
- barriers of entry low for OEM’s in an environment of dolby enabled products
- a single standard, (which is not controlled by an equipment brand) helps all the industry with designing to the same format, “enriches the ecosystem”.
- consistent R&D spend
The other aspect I found interesting was Dolby’s ability to adapt as the tech changes, we are a long way from cassette tapes today.
Coincidentally, there was a presentation from AD8 today on Dante video, the below excerpts from the pdf echo the above.

Dante AV Value Proposition
Simple, reliable, interoperable
audio & video signal transmission
across networks, everywhere

ODMs manage the complexity of making video products – getting them to design Dante into their video products can act as a force-multiplier to get into multiple brands’ video products through a single relationship
I'm watching to see if AD8 can bring the same “defacto” industry standard they have achieved in audio to video.
