##Dubai Airshow 2023
stale
Added 8 months ago

Yesterday, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the Dubai Airshow, where Droneshield showcased its cutting-edge technology at the Australian pavilion. The presence of CEO Oleg Vornik and Business Development Manager Louis Gamarra added a personal touch to the event as they openly interacted with the enthusiastic crowd. As a shareholder, I had the privilege of engaging in a detailed conversation with Louis for nearly an hour, gaining valuable insights into the business.

The exhibition featured the impressive DroneGun Mk4 and RFPatrol Mk2, both meticulously manufactured in Australia. It was emphasized that every component is sourced locally to comply with regulations for sales to Five Eyes countries and others. Their commitment to security was evident, with a keen interest in understanding the background of those exploring their products, particularly if they appeared to be Chinese nationals. This vigilance took on added significance when later in the day, I discovered another company, Skyfend (https://www.skyfend.com), with a seemingly identical product line to Droneshield. Interestingly, this Chinese company exhibited products strikingly similar to those of Droneshield. Below Pictures I took of SkyFend Pavilion at 2023 Dubai Airshow

In my inquiry about the differences between the two, the only response from the Skyfend representatives, who were Chinese nationals, was a claim that their product was superior. This raises intriguing questions that warrant further investigation. However, it's worth noting that Droneshield's strategic advantage lies in its accessibility to Five Eyes countries, and given the current global environment, Western countries may be hesitant to embrace Chinese technology in this sector. The competitive landscape promises to be a compelling area for future exploration.

To further underscore Droneshield's commitment to innovation, I learned that the company currently boasts a team of 85 full-time engineers. According to Louis, Droneshield is deeply entrenched in the realm of hardcore engineering, a testament to their dedication to pushing technological boundaries. During our conversation, he provided valuable insights into the intricacies of their technology. Notably, he mentioned that due to stringent regulations in Australia, they conduct their new tech testing exclusively in Virginia, USA.

One prevailing theme that emerged from our discussion was the apparent reluctance of many Western countries to swiftly acknowledge or address the evolving threat posed by drones. This hesitation underscores a substantial opportunity, particularly in safeguarding critical infrastructures such as airports. As the world grapples with the increasing sophistication of drone technology, Droneshield's expertise and forward-thinking approach position them as a key player in mitigating these emerging threats. The company's emphasis on rigorous engineering and global testing reflects a commitment to staying at the forefront of this rapidly evolving landscape.

Nice way to Start Independence day

DroneShield signs DoD Contract worth $9.9 Million

https://cdn-api.markitdigital.com/apiman-gateway/ASX/asx-research/1.0/file/2924-02682771-2A1458776?access_token=83ff96335c2d45a094df02a206a39ff4

$9.9 million DoD Contract

• Five Eyes DoD awards DroneShield a record $9.9 million contract

• The award follows DroneShield successfully completing a $3.8 million contract with the same customer

• Ongoing significant momentum in the business in a rapidly expanding market DroneShield Ltd (ASX:DRO) (DroneShield or the Company) has been awarded a follow-on 2- year R&D contract with a total value of $9.9 million by a Five Eyes Department of Defence (DoD). Approximately $4.5 million is due in the September and December 2023 quarters. Five Eyes refers to the defence/intelligence alliance between the US, Canada, UK, Australia and NZ.

The award follows DroneShield materially completing the $3.8 million contract announced 4 June 2021 with the DoD, with a final milestone payment expected this month.

Oleg Vornik, DroneShield’s CEO, commented, “Follow-on contracts are the ultimate customer measure of our performance. As an Australian sovereign industrial capability business, DroneShield is proud and pleased to continue undertaking multi-year contracts of increasing size with this customer.”

“This is the largest long-term contract received by DroneShield to date, significantly larger than the earlier, $3.8 million contract. The 2-year term locks in cash receipts over a period of time. Further larger contracts are anticipated following completion of this phase.”

“In the current uncertain geopolitical environment, there is a significant focus by the Five Eyes Governments to procure from defence industrial capability champions within their network of countries. Having deep engineering and research capability, TRL9 products and a track record of working with Defence, places DroneShield in a favourable position for ongoing work.”

Operational Update

• Following a strong $7 million cash receipts 1Q23 quarter, DroneShield is on track for an all-time record 2Q23 quarter and continuing on a trajectory for another record year for cash receipts in 2023. Further detail will be provided in the next 4C quarterly, due to be released later in July.

• Significant progress on manufacturing, operations and inventory scale-up to support additional anticipated orders for remainder of 2023. DroneShield is currently finalizing the location for a larger industrial site to move its Sydney operations to enable the growth.

• With the $11 million contract announced in December now fully delivered and paid for, DroneShield is progressing the inventory build of the second $11 million order announced in January, expected to be delivered later this year.

• Current order book (committed and binding customer purchase orders) of approximately $29 million, an all-time record.

• Over $200 million qualified opportunities pipeline (in addition to the order book), across approximately 80 projects.

• Ongoing record demand for counterdrone / C-UAS equipment, underscored by the events in Ukraine and increasing defence and security budgets globally.

• In addition to military and intelligence communities, significant engagement with critical infrastructure plants, airports and other civilian customers.

Interview

Further to @Summer12sstraw about the ShareCafe interview with Oleg I wanted to add a few notes. (I haven’t watched the Market Herald interview that @slymeats posted yet, but judging from the slide notes the content looks similar) Sometimes Droneshield can be a bit over promotional so I am trying to keep track of some of the statements made to compare to the actual outcomes over FY23.

  • The company is now reaching its breakout phase of the growth profile. Size of contracts have been progressively getting larger as Droneshield establishes itself with the government departments globally. This is indicated by the two recent 8 figure contracts. Ongoing contracts are expected to be more of this nature going forward.

  • SaaS was 5% of Revenue in FY2021. Oleg re-iterated that the goal is for this to make up 50% of Revenue within 5 Years. How this is tracking / growing will be able to be determined in the upcoming FY2022 results.

  • Expecting follow up to multiple R&D contracts. These are great contracts for Droneshield as they develop relationships with the client and are improving their product / SaaS offering to directly meet clients needs. They also further Droneshield’s capacity in the adjacent AI / Machine Learning sectors. There may be some key personnel risk here if the company starts taking on too much work, but the other side of that coin is that they can use these types of contracts to further develop their teams.
  • Australian DoD AI electronic warfare contract. The next contract is also expected to be larger than the previous ($3.8m over 2 years. Expected to end in the 2QFY23)
  • Australian DoD AI computer vision contract. ($800k over 1 year). Phase 2 expected commence early 2023
  • ISREW Panel
  • Expecting similar work with US DoD eg. the SBIR Phase 1 JV with Quantam Research - due for completion in Q1FY2023

  • Recommendation from the US DoD for Droneshield products to be deployed at military bases across the U.S. The rollout is expected to commence this year. This was a 12 month selection process, where 3 companies were selected to form a panel. I have listed the companies selected below which helps provide some insight into Droneshield’s competitors in the market. A point of interest is that D-Fend Solutions isn’t listed in Droneshield’s slides. It will be worth monitoring which companies are getting contracts and the associated values, in particular LITEYE.

923bf73b424adef5e2b811ecd9a3d7190987bf.jpeg

  • Bill amended last year in Australia for critical infrastructure owners to assess and mitigate threats against facilities. This will need to include threats from drones. (This could be a bit of an opportunity for AVA as well)

Nice exposure for DroneShield.

It’s no wonder they are nervous about drones, following the recent run-in they had with them at a recent public event.

How cool are the photos of guards sporting DroneGuns. I do hope those photos go viral

Having heard the Recent interview and looking through the announcements I feel like this is a business which is on the cusp of profitability and with a huge runway ahead of it and at least according to them are an industry leader.

the below kind of announcement supports the premise that droneshield is at the leading edge of its area. Given the (in my view) inevitable rise of drones in many walks of life I feel this is the time to get on board.

Droneshield getting its foot in the door of a VERY important arena. The US Department of Homeland Security.

And as the world opens up to travel, I suspect airports around the world will be knocking on DroneShield's door also. During shutdown, I suspect drone development and terrorists use of them have not been asleep, unlike the airports who have concentrated on cutting costs and most likely placed all counter-terrorist plans on hold at a time when they really should have been taking the opportunity to get fully prepared.

The following is an email I got sent as a DronShield investor.

DroneShield Collaborates with the US Department of Homeland Security

DroneShield Ltd (ASX:DRO) (“DroneShield" or the “Company”) has announced the purchase of several of its DroneSentry-X systems, providing on-the-move Counter-UAS (C-UAS) capabilities to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”). DroneShield continues to strengthen its collaboration with DHS and several of its component agencies on multiple fronts.

In February 2021, DroneShield entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate (“DHS S&T”), the group within DHS primarily tasked with collaborating with private sector organizations on development of new technologies, and subsequent adoption by U.S. Government agencies.

As a result of the partnership, DroneShield has undergone significant field trial evaluation working closely with DHS S&T throughout the year

Oleg Vornik, DroneShield’s CEO, commented, “Our working relationship with DHS and their guidance and input, has enabled DroneShield to rapidly increase our product capabilities for the continuously emerging C-UAS threat. Within the homeland security context, there is a significant and rising terrorist threat where small drones or sUAS can be effectively used by nefarious parties as a payload delivery and surveillance platform. In addition, there is an increasingly complex U.S. Border situation where small drones are used by drugs and human smugglers, and other illegal activity, creating a need for effective and adaptable counter-UAS solutions.”

In addition to its work with Homeland Security agencies, DroneShield has recently been awarded multiple contracts for its C-UAS solutions by U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and other Federal and State level government and law enforcement agencies, for both domestic and overseas deployments. ”

It's great to see the Australian Government still backing Droneshield with a $1.1 million in cash payment as a grant (R&D Tax Incentive) for its 2020 activities.

Oleg Vornik, DroneShield’s CEO, commented:

“DroneShield appreciates the substantial support it receives from the Australian Government at Federal and State level. We are a high-tech defence and homeland security business, employing over 30 engineers in Australia presently, and rapidly growing. This grant reflects the world-class cutting edge R&D work done here in Australia.”
