This week we reopened the doors to new members and are delighted to welcome some fresh new faces to our little community.

If you’re new to the team, welcome aboard! We’re excited to work together and uncover more opportunities in the lesser-known corners of the ASX.

We’ll schedule an induction session for new members once we finalise things, but we did receive a query during the week which got me (Andrew here) thinking; what are the ‘club rules’ for Strawman?

Well, aside from some expectations around civility and respect, there really aren’t any formal rules!

But if we were to post some guidelines, they’d probably go something like this:

1. No Bullsh*t

This one is inspired by Netflix’s Reed Hastings, which essentially encourages direct and honest communication. Everyone’s better off if we all communicate in an authentic, clear and transparent manner.

2. Dump the pump

We are here to discuss actionable investment ideas and strategies, backed by credible data and sound reasoning.

By all means, talk your book — but leave the ramping of some speccy nonsense to the grifters on twitter.

3. Agree to disagree

One of the biggest risks we face is ‘groupthink’. And while it’s nice to have others echo your views, it can blind you to the risks and falsely strengthen conviction.

Remember, the best way to improve an invest idea is to challenge it.

4. Debate ideas, not people

While it’s good to get some push back on your thinking, there’s no need to make it personal.

Leave the ad hominem attacks to the social media trolls.

5. Be a teacher

As Tim Minchin once said “Rejoice in what you learn, and spray it.”

Do it not just for the benefit of others, but also yourself. When one teaches, two learn.

6. Be humble

No one tends to stay at the top of the performance leaderboards for long, and even the very best investors will struggle through periods of underperformance.

Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

7. No talking out of school

Sharing member-exclusive ideas or content outside the club is like playing poker with your cards facing up –it hurts everyone involved.

What happens in Strawman stays in Strawman.

8. A broad church

There are dozens of ways to skin the investing cat, and we don’t really care if you’re a momentum trader, value investor or dividend diehard!

At the end of the day, results are what matter.

9. Own your ideas

You’ll find a lot of interesting stock ideas on Strawman, but whether or not you choose to act on them is entirely your call. As I like to say; you can borrow an idea, but you can’t borrow the conviction.

If you want someone to think for you, there’s an army of financial gurus out there eager to sell you some stock tips.

10. Have fun

Yes, investing can be serious business, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the process.

So let’s keep things engaging, friendly, and yes, even fun. Learning and laughing go hand in hand.

Closing thoughts

Hopefully these ‘rules’ give you a good sense of what it’s all about, and will help you fit right in — no awkward handshake required.

The key thing to remember is that, as with most things in life, the more you put in, the more you’ll get out.

And while we can’t guarantee anything in terms of returns, we can absolutely promise that the connections you make, the insights you gain, and the discussions you have will sharpen your thinking and help you become a more informed and confident investor.
